Curiosities about Galician geography (II)

A few days ago, we explain some curiosities about Galician geography, as the importance of natural spaces or the presence of very old vegetation. Today, we know in detail other characteristics about this region. If you walk with your eyes wide open, you can discover a new Galicia in each step.

The Galician lithological contrast

We can split Galicia in relation to a great number of criteria, but one of the most relevant is the lithological configuration. In Galicia there are two main zones. On one site the granitic area and in other hand the metamorphic sector. This differentiation explains the great variations in the Galician landscapes with rounded forms in the granitic sector, as Monte Pindo or areas characterized for the slates erosion and schists as As Catedrais beach (Aguas Santas).

Yes, Galicia is an area marked by glaciers

If we are analyzing the current temperatures in Galicia, could be difficult believe that this territory was cover by big glaciers. But in the past the ice was a great importance in Galician landscapes modelling. This relevance can see in the U-shaped valleys and the great amounts of sediments eroded by the ice. But these evidences do not appear only in high mountains, the glaciers influence also defined the littoral morphologies with the accumulation of glacier material in cliff areas.

The thermal waters as resource

Visit thermal zones is frequently in Galicia. In the last years these areas increased the tourist interest and everyday more people benefit from them. But how this appear? The secret of thermal waters is hide below the ground. The granitic soils filled with fractures are responsible to enable water descent and that these heats below the ground and return to the surface with the mix of soil properties.
